We're Back!!!

Great to see everyone again! To follow up on our discussion of listening. Everyone must come up with a strategy that they will practice when daydreaming or
"thought speed" begins to happen...You must give me a detail plan of your strategy and identify some moments that you know it will likely occur (hopefully, not in my class!). The most must be 150 minimum and is due on Tuesday, Sept 14th.

  1. In some classes, especially during lectures, I have a habit of daydreaming. This usually happens when the material seems to not pertain to me which causes me to quickly lose focus and shift interest. I also find myself getting distracted when I hear a word or phrase that, for whatever reason, stands out from the rest being spoken and localizes my attention to that specific thing. When this happens my thoughts usually lead to other thoughts and before I notice what has happened much time has passed by that I could have devoted to the speaker and their message.
    My plan to combat my daydreaming in the future is to not get so caught up with individual words or sentences to the point where I lose out on the overall purpose of the speech. I also plan to take notes when I need to remember something. I have found that taking notes is a good way of recording information; it helps you remember what you have forgotten and is a good preventive measure for losing out on something that is important. Finally I plan on finding ways in which I can apply what is being said to me on a personal level, if it has not done so already, instead if dismissing it as something that has no relevance to me. Using these measures should, in the long run, make me a better listener and probably a better speaker as well.

  2. For me, I wouldn’t say that daydreaming happens all the time, but most of the time. It can be the quickest day dream ever such as a couple seconds or minutes, or if on a bad day then maybe an entire class period. I always day dream at random times such as while being in class or even eating lunch. I realized that I don’t even have to be bored to daydream. It is just a natural part of my life and I’m not sure how to keep it under control. I daydream in all my classes and it really affects my attention span. On occasions I do realize that when I get enough sleep at night, actually eat breakfast in the morning, and bring water and light snacks with me to class throughout the day, I helps me focus on the topic and I don’t end up falling asleep either. I’m not saying that it will take the daydreaming away regardless because you can’t get rid of it, but it will happen less and help me stay focused instead of being on cloud nine like always.

  3. I admit that I daydream quite often. It doesn't necessarily have to do with the class or the topic of the discussion. It mostly has to do, at least for me, with distractions. I will hear a word or phrase and start thinking about memories that have to do with those words and my mind just trails off. I need to first start by getting more sleep and eating better so I can totally be focused. I also have to try to catch myself when thinking about something that is not related to discussion and just block that out of my mind. I plan to start taking more notes because I have learned from experience that I don't tend to remember everything in the long run. I want to use only key words instead of writing down whole sentences because the long writing would keep me from listening.
    I plan to look at the speaker the entire time so I don't get distracted by other people in the room. I know that I can be a better listener and I am going to use all of the tips learned in class and my plan to achieve this.

  4. Day dreaming is normal for everyone. In my opinion it is something that can not be controlled no matter how hard you try to control it. I day dream a lot in all of my classes not on purpose but because my attention span is not long enough to pay attention the whole entire class. I’m pretty sure that everyone can relate to this experience. The strategies I plan to do so that I can pay attention more and not day dream so much is to not judge the lesson in advance to make my interest go down before the start of class. I also plan to sit next to someone that will keep me awake and not let me drift away from the class. It is also very helpful to eat a healthy breakfast for morning classes and get a well rested night of sleep. If I use these tips I believe that I will pay attention more and not day dream so much.

  5. One thing that I do quite often is daydream while I’m in class. I don’t do it consciously, it just happens from time to time. I think what happens is I get extremely bored, and then I begin to daydream, and sometimes I may fall asleep unintentionally. Most of the time I day dream during lectures, or if I’m not participating in class. My plan to prevent myself from daydreaming is to come to class with a positive attitude and to be ready to work. Most of the time when I come to class, I already have the mindset that I’m not going to do anything because I don’t want to be in class. I also think that if I take notes during class that will keep my mind from simultaneously wondering in space. Ultimately my goal isn’t to just focus and pay attention, but I want to learn how to always apply these things to my everyday life, and not just in this class, but every class I have. I know that if I’m able to be a good listener to others then people will be good listeners when I’m talking.

  6. I often find myself daydreaming when, I’m in a class for a long period of time or when there is a speaker talking about something that I may feel does not matter. I may start off with just a simple taught about anything and then it turns into a full on daydream. I then realize that I am in class and I come right back, but by this time I have missed parts of the speech or presentation. So I know in order for me to sharpen my listening skills I must put into to practice a plan. Which would help me to improve my skills, such as when I start to feel myself daydream have one thing or word that will be like a flash which will bring me back to paying attention. Also I need to not be so quick to judge the speaker before I even hear what they have to say because I am putting in my mind that the speaker is not going to bring anything for me so I begin to daydream before they even start to speak.
    I know that I have a short attention span and that is because I tent to let outside distraction come into my head and I start thinking about other things that I might have to do later. I have to learn how when I walk in a room leave my outside taught outside the classroom. I know that this plan will take time and practice before I sharpen my listen skills. I can say that I even put them into practice today in my Race Class and Gender Class because I know that I am paying for a class that I might not get anything out of if I don’t listen and pay attention.

  8. Daydreaming is a weakness that many people possess. It is something that sneaks up on one without one knowing when one least expects it. Daydreaming, coming from personal past experiences, happens to me when I am overly tired, I am bored, or I am just not interested in what a speaker is saying. If there is a subject that I know I am not good at, or the information in a lecture I know I will never use in my life, that is when I fall victim to daydreaming. Daydreaming can happen to anyone no matter what their age. However, some people know how to fight daydreaming better than others. Bringing snacks and a drink to class is a strategy that will work for me in my struggle not to daydream. When one feels that one is starting to daydream and one’s thought are going off into space, one could always take a drink of your nice, cold water or eat a little snack. Now back to normal, one can return to normal alertness and continue to listen. I have always used this strategy, not only to stop daydreaming, but to also stay awake. If I daydream too long, I know it will lead to me falling sleep. Having a snack and a drink with me is my most effective strategy.

  9. My biggest weakness when it comes to daydreaming is when I sit facing the window or I am stressed about something. Also I often hear a trigger word that brings my mind totally off topic from what the speaker is saying. My daydreaming occurs more in a lecture then a more hands on learning. To stop my daydreaming my first plan is to go into the class with a clear head. I need to remember that no matter what is going on in my life that for this short period of time I need to focus and push aside any distractions. Classes are too expensive to be wasted by a temporary distraction. Also when I get inside the class I will be sure to not sit facing the window. I’ve always had a problem where I look out the window and wonder about stuff. I never seem to have these sort of distractions if I’m directly facing the professor. I know that if I correct these daydreaming triggers that I will become a better listener.

  10. Throughout my educational career, I have always day dreamed throughout my teachers’ lectures. I have noticed that I tend to lose attention whenever I get bored or sleepy. This past summer during EOP I noticed how much attention is required to be successful in the classroom. My plan to stop day dreaming in class is to, first of all, I am going to get enough sleep to function properly in all my classes. Boredom is a big thing for people my age, especially during lectures. My plan to overcome this is to get involved in the classroom. Sitting there without talking is the worst thing I can do. From now on I will interact and become interested in the lectures. I believe that even though I may not find the lectures to be important to me, they are actually being taught to me for a reason. I believe that if I put effort into the lectures, I will actually get a lot out of them.

  11. Almost everyone daydreams either intentionally or unintentionally. It is not easy to prevent daydreaming. I daydream sometimes in classes if the classes are too long, I don’t get much sleep the night before, if I didn’t have much to eat before the class, or if I am thinking about something that is not related to the class because of a distraction. I don’t get distracted easily, but when I do it is sometimes hard for me to get back on track. But if I try hard enough not to get distracted by ignoring distractions, I am pretty sure I can avoid being distracted. Another thing I can do to avoid daydreaming is getting adequate sleep; if I don’t get enough sleep I am going to be tired and I am going to be more vulnerable to daydreaming. If I cannot get enough sleep, I am going to have to bring a cold drink to keep myself awake in class. The other thing that starts my daydreaming is hunger. When I feel hungry, I think about what I am going to eat after the class and that leads to other thoughts and while I am doing that I will be missing important things the speaker is discussing. So to avoid this I am going to try to have a good meal before my classes. If I am not able to eat before class, I am going to have to bring some snacks to class and that will put off my hunger till the class ends. These are the strategies I am going to use to avoid and snap out of daydreaming.

  12. Daydreams are an addiction every student has to cope with. Majority of the student body often finds themselves victims to the outside world while sitting in class. I hate to admit it, but I am among the majority who finds it sometimes difficult to pay attention in class. One factor that really affects my thoughts is the temperature of the room. If it is too hot, I have no interest in learning. I become very uneasy and start to wander off with my mind to avoid the heat in the classroom. When it is hot, i scan what the professor is saying for words that remind me of past events. After finding a word I like, my mind is off to the races with thoughts. I also have a tendency to find myself daydreaming about my relationships among peers, professors, and girlfriends. These are people that are very important to me, however; they are not important to the moment. What I mean by that is, it is perfectly fine to think about your loved ones but not while in class. The previous class Yolanda had said something very moving and will affect my outlook on the classroom for the rest of my life. She had explained how nothing in the outside world matters when she is in class. In my opinion if i have to be there for an hour and some odd minutes, I mine as well learn. These words have made my daydreams almost cease due to the energy I use on focusing. I also have found that dressing appropriately for classrooms instead of weather helps a lot. This can help the distraction of temperature in the room, and increase my comfort level in the classroom. I look forward to becoming the best student I can be, and show great appreciation for Yolanda's words of wisdom.

  13. For me, daydreaming occurs not too often. When it does happen, it’s usually because the topic is irrelevant to me. When the subject it irrelevant to me, I am more easily distracted, often resulting in daydreaming. The littlest things can start daydreaming for me, such as looking at the clock, looking out the window, or watching someone else doing something they shouldn’t be doing. I have a plan to overcome my easily distracted ways. I will simply focus more, and take notes during things I can’t quite pay attention to. Focusing more by itself will help me pay attention to the topic being presented. Taking notes will take my focusing to the next level. You have to pay attention to take notes, so paying attention and taking notes will double my attention span towards the subject. I have already began practicing this strategy, and it has really helped me stay on topic. Not only will this technique help me now during class, but it will help me throughout all of my class and in life.

  14. One of my major problems in high school and during the summer session was listening. I was not able to concentrate because I would daydream during the class. Doing this everyday during every period caused my grades to not be at their full potential. Now that I am in college, those old habits are going to stop now. So I have come up with one way to stop my daydreaming habits which is taking notes during almost every lecture. I never took notes in high school which gave me nothing to do, but daydream. If I am taking notes it will give me something to do so I am not daydream. It will also help me in studying for any upcoming test I may have. The simple act of taking notes during any and almost every lecture will help me do better in Rider than I have in the past.
